How To Create Your Blogging Roadmap

Every blogger (irrespective of their popularity) needs to consider the future implications of their actions; this is true of any discipline within blogging, be it SEO, monetization or traffic. It’s a fact of life that you won’t reach your destination if you don’t know where you’re going - so why would it be any different online?
If you’re driving from A to B, unless you know where B is and how to get there you’ll never arrive; and the same logic applies online. If you’re not mindful of what the future holds then you’re driving blind. Rather than get overly cryptic let me explain how to make your blogging roadmap:
#1 - Have a business plan
You don’t need to be a business to have a business plan - it’s just a document defining your objectives and timescales. So if you want to have 1,000 RSS subscribers by January 2009 that’s your business plan (because you’ve marked your objective and timescale). Once you’ve written your business plan you know where you’re going - that’s the easy bit.
#2 - Understand where you are now
Anyone can write on a piece of paper “I want to make $100,000 next year blogging” but if you’ve only got 5 RSS readers and no income it’s unlikely to materialize. The roadmap doesn’t have to be completely realistic but it has to be rational: you can aim high provided you can explain how you might get there. Aiming wildly at the sky and hoping for stardom isn’t a good way to meet your objectives.
#3 - Plan your resources
How many of the famous bloggers got where they are without promoting themselves? How many did it without spending a penny? How many did it without dedicating any time? None of them - that’s how many. To get anywhere you need resources because getting your name out there is the hard part. Competitions with desirable prizes are a great method provided you have something to offer (not necessarily an item, maybe a service). Just look what Unique Blog Designs [http://www.uniqueblogdesigns.com/] have done by offering their services as competition prizes… Time and money are resources and you’ll have to spend at least one to meet your objectives.
#4 - Find your inspiration
It’s all well and good aiming for somewhere but why are you doing it? You need to know your inspiration otherwise you won’t make it. Blogging on a regular basis (and producing high quality content) while trying to balance a full time job, friends, family and other commitments is not something that is easy to do. Yet you don’t need to know much about it to know how important regular updates are. Blogging becomes a lifestyle and without your inspiration you won’t make it.
Blogging is a very difficult thing to do well; just look at John, Shoemoney, Problogger (and more) and you’ll see that it takes more than good content to make it in this lucrative business (there’s that word again). January is a great time to do your roadmap because you can work out where you are, where you need to be and dedicate resources towards your goals. Rich and famous bloggers are still people, hell, sometimes they write down their advice and publish it just to help you out

Google Goes Cheap with AdSense Affiliate Program

I just got an email from Google concerning changes to their AdSense affiliate program. The program pays you to refer other publishers to Google AdSense. The current pay structure is:
$5 when the referred publisher makes $5
$250 when the referred publishers make $100
$2,000 bonus for referring 25 publishers earning $100 or more in any 180 day period
Google is doing away with the above setup and will be paying just $100 when a referred publisher brings in $100.
We are writing to share some important information with you about referrals to the AdSense product. As part of ongoing efforts to optimize revenue opportunities for our publishers, we are constantly experimenting with new revenue-enhancing features as well as tweaking those products already available to our publishers.
In this spirit, we will be making some significant changes to referrals for the AdSense program in the coming weeks.
As some of you may remember, in February 2007, as an experiment, we raised the bounty paid (from $100 to $250) when a publisher you refer brings in $100. We have decided to conclude this experiment and return to the original paid bounty amount of $100. In addition, we will no longer be offering the $5 bounty for the first $5 that a referred publisher brings in or the $2,000 bonus for referring 25 publishers earning $100 or more in any 180 day period. $100 will be the only bounty paid for referrals to the AdSense program.
If you’re currently displaying referral units on your site directing users to sign up for AdSense, read on below for details about what to expect in the coming weeks.
In early January, your AdSense account will be updated to only note the $100 payment for referring users to AdSense. You will continue to be paid under the current bounty structure ($5, $250, $2,000) until late January, after which you will receive $100 once a referred publisher brings in $100 within 180 days.
Thank you for referring users to AdSense in the past. We apologize for any inconvenience this news may cause.
I never made much with the Google AdSense affiliate program. I expect to make even less now. If anyone signed up to the AdSense program through me, please try to make your $100 before this month is up.

Evading the Google Adwords Slap - Guide to a Great Quality Score

Is Adwords getting you down with the dreaded “Poor” quality score? Here are some tips I use to coerce Google into giving me a great (or OK) quality score.
Tip Number 1: If your keyword list has been slapped with POOR across the board, it’s time to delete the entire campaign and restart using some of the tips below. Rebuild your campaign and if it still does not work, look at the last tip for a solution.
Tip Number 2: I have found many times that the poor quality score was from trying to stick too many broad keywords into one group. Try breaking your keywords up into related groups. If you have a ton of long tail keywords (meaning keywords that are more specific: IE “Find local singles California”), try to find two or three words in common for each adgroup.
Tip Number 3: Start your campaign bidding high. Find the eCPC of the offer you’re trying to promote by asking your affiliate manager for the average of the offer. Next, bid ~ 40% of the average eCPC. This will keep your Click through rate up while you have a chance to refine your ads.
Tip Number 4: Split test your ads. Use A/B testing on your ads. This will dramatically increase your click through rate (CTR) and eventually your quality score can go from OK to GREAT.
Tip Number 5: If you still are getting a POOR quality score, try removing all the BROAD keywords and readd them using phrase and exact match. To add the keywords as phrase and exact match you just re-add the keywords with the following format “keyword1″ and [keyword1].
Tip Number 6: If after everything you’re still getting a POOR quality score, you’ll need to optimize your landing page a bit more. Use the phrase and exact match keywords and sprinkle them throughout your landing page a bit more. It doesn’t take a ton of keywords to raise it just that little bit. Perhaps just adding a keyword or two into your title tag could help. Add some ALT tags and TITLE tags.
Tip Number 7: If you’re STILL getting a POOR quality score, you’ll need to do some *special* optimization. Using a special tool called MOD_REWRITE for apache (which most servers have installed by default), we can trick Google into thinking we’re more relevant than we actually are.
First, we need to create (or append) some code to a .htaccess file. If you already have a .htaccess file in the public_html folder on your webserver, download it and append the following code to the end. Otherwise create a new text file in notepad and save it as htaccess.txt. Once you upload it to your server, rename it to .htaccess
For this example, I’m going to pretend we’re making a dating site.
RewriteEngine OnRewriteRule ^([^/]+)-dating/$ /index.php?keyword=$1 [L]
So what does this do? Now we can assign each keyword a special url that looks something like: “mysite.com/California-dating/” Notice the similarity to the .htaccess? We’re essentially replacing the ([^/]+) with whatever keyword we want.
This will load the index.php page as if you had typed in “mysite.com/index.php?keyword=California.” We have just dynamically redirected the url without Google ever knowing.
You can change “California” in the url to anything and it will automatically load the new page with the new keyword.
Now, on your landing page at the very top add this code:

Next, anytime you want this keyword (in this example, California) to show on your landing page, simple add the following code.

Now you have a great way to optimize your landing page dynamically! Google loves this!
TIP Number 8: If you’ve tried all the above and still cannot get the quality score to get off of POOR, you can try buying a new domain. From my experience you can buy a new domain name and transfer the same content onto the new domain. In every case I’ve done this the result has been an OK or GREAT quality score.
This works because Google’s quality score can sometimes get so bad on a particular domain that all hope of redeeming the domain back to an OK quality score is faint. Buying a new domain essentially is giving you a fresh slate.

Increase the chances of making Digg’s Front Page

Digg its not anymore only an informational website but its getting very influential to many bloggers and website owners. Digg can be a heavy driver of revenue-generating traffic and can also help make your website viral.
Here is an interesting tool that will help you finding interesting topics to blog or not about. This tool gives you the latest 500 popular stories for any topic or sub-topic within Digg and analyzes the text found in the story titles and descriptions. It also helps you finding specific keywords for your post titles and it will increase the chances to get dugg.

Tips to increase even more the chances of making the front page
Follow Top Story Submitters
If you are new to the site, once you got signed up, you need to spend a couple days exploring the site, “studying” dugg stories and it user; See if the user who submitted the story has a lot of friends or dugg or submitted a lot of stories before. I would recommend to follow their steps, for some reason they got to the front page.
Use the Digg Trends Tool to find hot keywords
As I said before this tool gives you hot keywords. I call it Hot Keywords because those are the most used words in the Front Page makers stories for example if your story its about iPhones they hot keywords would be “Jailbreak, apple, firmware”
Create a Friend Network
More friends is not necessarily better. The more friends you have, the more votes it will take for your story to hit the home page. Better to have 20 active friends than 400 deadbeats.
Digg has a system that block making a lot of friends right away, I would suggest to participate a little first, digg like 10 - 20 stories first.
Get to know your “friends”. Make them to like you by leaving sincere and intelligent comments on their stories. Wouldn’t you love that? GIVE WHAT YOU LIKE TO RECEIVE.
It might take a while
This its not a “1 minute get rich program” this could actually take a couple months of digging, commenting and making more friends. After a couple months doing that, your friends will automatically start reading your stories and digging them.
Good Luck!
If you know another technique share it.

Do you want to know how to make bloggers write about your webs?

Here are the tips:
Bloggers always struggle with content, we all want to write our own content, write exclusive hot news, but thats hard, not everyone can do that.
What if you start giving some “exclusive” information to some not so famous bloggers, yet with a good amount of traffic.
Do you design? Well, do a couple wallpapers with the blog´s logo or offer them if they need a banner design, a new logo, or anything that you can do for them, for NO MONEY.
Do you Write? Then write a a couple great articles and show it to the blogger and tell the person that if he/her publish that will be a honor to contribute in that blog, because you always read it.It doesnt have to be 100% truth, but… say something that people wants to hear.
Offer your skills.
Do that to a bunch of bloggers a couple times. Ask the blogger if it has AIM, MSN or any other Instant Messenger and every time you see them online, go and ask him/her how is he or she doing. Tell the person you love his or her blog and once in a while invite him/her to visit your website, dont be to spammy, just once. After a couple months once you feel the person trust you ask him/her if she can give you a little help with your web.
Just remember. Be Nice, Polite, Funny, lovely.
